As part of the campaign launch, employees participated in an awareness parade through the Nchalo Estate residential areas carrying placards with messages promoting workplace safety and health.
Nchalo Estate General Manager, Ricky Pillay emphasised that the campaign demonstrates how much the company values its employees, referring to them as “the sweetest assets.”
“The 2025 Safety Campaign marks the beginning of a journey toward ensuring that our workers remain healthy and safe here at the estate,” he said. “This will be achieved through two key projects — ‘Safety Mindset’, which addresses how people perceive safety, and ‘Safety Resilience’, which focuses on preventing accidents before they occur.”
He added that the company has strengthened security around the estate by hiring more security personnel, working in partnership with the Malawi Police Service, and recruiting safety coordinators — efforts that have significantly reduced cases of assault and robbery.
Pilly further highlighted that Illovo Sugar Malawi is also improving the living conditions of its workers by renovating employees housing on the estate, saying: “We have invested over MK1 billion in rehabilitating our workers’ houses because we understand that another way to ensure their safety is by providing them with better living conditions.”
