A 35-year-old man, identified as Cassim Tchunga Friday, has died after he was electrocuted while attempting to remove electrical wiring from a house affected by flash floods at Mapila Village in Mangochi.

According to a report by Mangochi Police Station public relations officer, lnspector Amina Tepani Daudi, Friday — who hailed from Kwitanda Village, Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka District — is reported to have left his home on August 24, 2026, but failed to return.
A search party by his wife and relatives found dead the following day, submerged in floodwater inside a nearby house, close to an electrical wiring box.
According to police records, the station had been receiving several reports of theft involving electrical wires, doors, door frames and water appliances from houses whose occupants abandoned them following flash floods in the area.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Friday may have entered the house with the intention of removing electrical wiring when he came into contact with live wires, resulting in being electrocuted.
Police officers visited the scene and conveyed the body to Mangochi District Hospital where postmortem examination confirmed that the cause of death was electrocution.
Police are advising members of the public to avoid entering or tampering with electrical installations as live wires may pose a serious risk of electrocution.
