The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has applauded the crucial role traditional leaders play in sensitizing their subjects on issues that affect and also work for them, hence saw the need to civic educate them on the voting process.
MEC Commissioner Reverend Clifford Baloyi said this during a sensitization meeting with the traditional leaders in Matenje Ward in Kasungu North West Constituency where it is expected to hold by-elections on November 5.
Commissioner Baloyi said they saw it wise to engage chiefs to help spread the message of importance of going to vote in the by-election.

“We believe chiefs have been vital in sensitizing their subjects to vote in the by-elections because they yield a lot of influence in the community due to their social responsibility.
“So the meetings are to inform them on what is expected while we are approaching polling day, what they are supposed to do and not do but also on issues of result management.
He also said it is the democratic right of every eligible citizen to take part in voting to choose leaders of their choice and the process starts with getting the right information about how things work and urged all that registered to vote.
