Severe tropical storm CHIDO has intensified into Tropical Cyclone moving slowly maintaining westwards direction at a speed of 13 km/h — reports the Department of Climate Change & Meteorological Services.
“The weather models are still indicating that CHIDO will enter the Mozambique Channel and is expected to make a landfall in Mozambique around Nacala on Sunday afternoon, December 15th, which is about 500km away from Mulanje.
Thus the Department predicts that since CHIDO has intensified into a tropical cyclone there is that possibility of its remnants l to extend to southern parts of Malawi after landing 500km away from Mulanje.
The Meteorological Department says it is “still monitoring the movement of CHIDO and will update the nation with any vital information regarding this Tropical Cyclone”.
The next update of the progress of CHIDO will be issued tomorrow, December 12, says the Department.
“However, over the next few days, we are expecting hot conditions with localised rainfall over central and southern areas due to the influence of an unstable easterly air mass.
“The public is strongly advised to seek shelter in sturdy buildings during a thunderstorm until it dissipates.”
