US-based Temwa Chawinga went through the drills with the rest of the Scorchers as they prepare for the maiden Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAfCON) in Morocco and she expressed optimism that several of her teammates are ready to impress.

In an interview with FAM Media on Monday after training with the squad hours after her arrival from her base where she plays for Kansas City Current in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), Temwa said she “was confident the rest of the players will perform their best to be spotted because there will be plenty of player agents”.
“The Africa Cup of Nations is a big stage,” she said. “The whole world will be watch and plenty of player agents will be here to pick some best players.
“We’ve reached another level of participation after just been playing at COSAFA Championship and I am sure the upcoming players will do well and impress scouts to join the likes of Rose Kabzere, Faith Chinzimu, Tabitha in Europe.”

“This is a great moment in Malawi football and we are ready to perform to our best,” said the vice-captain to her sister Tabitha, who added that she was warmly welcomed by the squad.
Temwa, who led the Scorchers to their first-ever international title when they won the COSAFA Women’s Championship 2023 where she won the Golden Boot and named Player of the Tournament, said she was proud to represent her country at this level.
“It’s been such a long time since I played with the rest of the team [in previous assignments] but am ready now to do my best,” she promised.
The Scorchers — who lost 1-3 to Morocco in Rabat in a friendly games last Thursday and will face Ghana in Mohammedia this Thursday, July 23 — open their maiden appearance against 10-time champions, Nigeria on July 28 at Al Madina Stadium in Rabat.
It will be followed by Egypt on August 1 at Moulay Hassan Stadium and concluding the group stage against neighbours and regional rivals Zambia on August 5 at Al Madina Stadium.
