Former Supreme Court judge, Dunstain Mwaungulu, who is eyeing for the Presidency of the country ahead of the 2025 General Elections, seems to be off track by faulting fellow presidential aspirant Dalitso Kabambe’s aspirations for the country’s economic recovery.
Analysts observe that Kabambe’s unexpected landslide victory in UTM Party’s elective convention — against heavyweights, Patricia Kaliati, Newton Kambala and Matthews Mtumbuka — has unsettled some confidence in presidential aspirants and Mwaungulu is one of them.
Thus, in a Facebook position made yesterday, Mwaungulu touts himself as the “best President for the Malawi economy, economists and economics”.
“I am challenging Dr Kabambe on his policies — and record! I think l am the best custodian of the Malawi economy than Dr.Kabambe. He was in the Ministry of Finance (in charge of budgets) for a spell and that means that the difficulties this economy has had in the past and during his tenure are partly caused or exacerbated by him.
“And then he was Governor of the Reserve Bank — at the centre of monetary policy. What has he got to show for this? I checked his vision in a recent write-up — it is just a pipedream because it does not show what has to be done in the economy to realise the vision and visions.
“I will hammer this in my campaign and debate him. I am running simply because of the economy and l think that l have better approaches to solving the economic riddle of Malawi,” he said.
Mwaungulu, a former Supreme Court judge, is alluding that Kabambe’s policies during his time in key government roles have contributed significantly to Malawi’s ongoing economic struggles.
But this falls short of Mwaungulu of specifically highlighting his own agenda for the forthcoming 2025 General Elections and other schools of thought believe that the former Supreme Court judge should focus on his own manifesto rather than poking holes at other aspirants aspirations as he has done on Kabambe
“The right candidate to criticise is probably that of the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) by highlighting his shortfalls in the past four years under his administration,” says our source. “The aura that Kabambe has gained in the public domain is huge following his landslide triumph in the UTM.
“Mwaungulu is not known in as far as Malawians politics is concerned, especially in the Malawians economic space. All we know of him is his contributions in the country’s justice system.
“He should market himself first by concentrating on his own aspirations because if he starts attacking others, he will most definitely lose the attention of the electorate, which at this point is demanding tangible pledges, not just words,” said our source.
While Mwaungulu maybe obsessed with mere rhetorical criticism of a man he probably know little off, it is in sharp contrast to the rich resume that Kabambe holds, which the UTM delegates opted to give their vote of confidence for at the elective convention
Kabambe, with his extensive background in economics, government service and international relations, presents a compelling case for the presidency of Malawi.
His professional journey, marked by significant achievements and a deep understanding of Malawi’s socio-economic landscape, equips him with the necessary skills and vision to lead the nation towards a prosperous future.
We explore the myriad reasons why Kabambe stands out as the best candidate for the presidency of Malawi:
Economic expertise

Foreign affairs and international cooperation
Kabambe’s tenure as Secretary to Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation highlights his diplomatic skills and understanding of international relations. In this role, he successfully navigated complex geopolitical landscapes, fostering strong relationships with international partners and securing aid and investments for Malawi.
His ability to engage with the global community and advocate for Malawi’s interests on the international stage is crucial for attracting foreign investment, enhancing trade relations, and securing development assistance.
As president, Kabambe’s diplomatic prowess would be instrumental in positioning Malawi as a respected and influential player in the global arena.
Commitment to good governance

His emphasis on good governance is critical for restoring public trust in government institutions and ensuring that resources are used effectively and efficiently.
By prioritising good governance, Kabambe aims to create a government that is responsive to the needs of its citizens and capable of driving positive change.
Vision for a prosperous Malawi—Economic diversification and industrialisation
Kabambe’s vision for Malawi’s economic future includes diversification and industrialization. He recognises the need to reduce the country’s dependency on agriculture by promoting other sectors such as manufacturing, tourism and information technology.
By fostering a diversified economy, Kabambe aims to create more job opportunities, reduce poverty, and increase economic resilience. His plans for industrialisation focus on adding value to local products, improving infrastructure, and attracting both domestic and foreign investments.
This comprehensive approach to economic development is essential for achieving sustainable growth and improving the standard of living for all Malawians.
Enhancing Education and skill development
Education is a cornerstone of Kabambe’s vision for Malawi — he believes that a well-educated population is key to driving innovation, improving productivity, and fostering economic growth.
His plans for the education sector include increasing access to quality education, improving educational infrastructure, and investing in teacher training.
Additionally, Kabambe emphasises the importance of vocational training and skill development to equip the youth with the skills needed to thrive in a modern economy.
By prioritising education, Kabambe aims to empower Malawians to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development.
Improving healthcare and social services
Kabambe’s experience in the health sector informs his comprehensive approach to improving healthcare and social services. He envisions a healthcare system that is accessible, affordable, and of high quality.
His plans include increasing healthcare funding, expanding medical infrastructure, and ensuring the availability of essential medicines and medical supplies. Furthermore, Kabambe is committed to addressing social issues such as poverty, inequality, and social exclusion.
By improving social services, he aims to create a more inclusive society where every Malawian has the opportunity to thrive.
Strong ethical foundations and personal integrity
One of the most compelling reasons for Kabambe’s suitability for the presidency is his unwavering commitment to ethical leadership as throughout his career, he has maintained high ethical standards, promoting transparency, accountability, and integrity in all his endeavors.
His reputation for honesty and ethical conduct has earned him the respect and trust of colleagues and the public alike. As president, Kabambe’s ethical leadership would be instrumental in restoring public confidence in government institutions and fostering a culture of integrity and accountability.
Personal integrity and dedication to public service
Kabambe’s personal integrity and dedication to public service are evident in his career trajectory and accomplishments. He has consistently placed the interests of the nation above personal gain, demonstrating a deep commitment to serving the people of Malawi.
His humility, empathy, and genuine concern for the well-being of others make him a compassionate and relatable leader. As president, Kabambe’s personal integrity and dedication to public service would inspire confidence and unity among Malawians, fostering a sense of shared purpose and national pride.
Dalitso Kabambe’s extensive experience in economic management, public service, and international relations, combined with his unwavering commitment to ethical leadership and sustainable development, make him the ideal candidate for the presidency of Malawi.
His proven track record in stabilising the economy, enhancing public health, and fostering international cooperation underscores his capability to address the multifaceted challenges facing the nation.
His vision for a prosperous and inclusive Malawi, grounded in good governance, economic diversification, and social equity, offers a promising path towards a brighter future for all Malawians.
As president, Dalitso Kabambe has the potential to transform Malawi into a thriving, resilient, and equitable nation — ensuring that every Malawian has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
In contrast, Mwaungulu emphasises that he is running for the presidency “because the economy is in crisis, and it’s time for real leadership”, saying: “I am the best custodian of Malawi’s economy, and my approach is rooted in reality.
“Unlike Dr. Kabambe, I understand what needs to be done to get this country back on track. I will provide the leadership and solutions that the people of Malawi deserve.”
In analysing Mwaungulu’s campaign, the media takes note that it is centered on “revitalising Malawi’s economy, focusing on key issues like reducing inflation, improving fiscal discipline, and creating sustainable job opportunities”.
He is reported to have promised to introduce clear economic reforms aimed at increasing productivity and economic growth, strengthening the country’s financial institutions, and addressing the persistent challenges of poverty and inequality.
“I have a vision for a Malawi where economic stability and prosperity are accessible to all,” Mwaungulu said. “And unlike Dr. Kabambe, I am not just offering empty rhetoric; I will back my plans with clear actions that will have an immediate impact on the people of Malawi.”
While Mwaungulu seems to be focused on Kabambe, he shouldn’t forget other aspirants, that include President Lazarus Chakwera — who is just as strong being incumbent despite numerous economic hardships Malawians have faced under his watch.
The other candidates are the former President, Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), who still commands a huge electorate base as well as Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) president, Enoch Chihana.
As for Kabambe, what he worked through in just under three months in the UTM — that convinced the delegates to hand him that landslide victory — is food for thought for the other aspirants, which we take note that Mwaungulu has grasped to the point of punching holes in Kabambe’s aspirations as opposed to highlighting his own.
