A husband in Dowa is in police custody after he allegedly murdered 24-year-old Yakonia Weston James, whom he allegedly caught red-handed having sexual intercourse with his wife.
A report from Dowa Police public relations officer (PRO) Sub-Inspector Gladson M’bumpha, identifies the husband as Andrew Makanjira (45) from Mbalame 1 Village in Traditional Authority Mkukula in the district.

Sub-Inspector M’bumpha’s report says the husband confessed to have killed James, alleging that he found him having sex with his wife at Kanjondo Stream Drift.
The suspect’s wife, who was also assaulted in the process and was treated at Dowa District Hospital, also confessed to have been caught red-handed having sexual intercourse with the deceased, according to Sub-Inspector M’bumpha’s report.
The deceased, who is from Goma Village in Traditional Authority Msakambewa is reported to have left home on Monday December 28, 2020 in the company of his two brothers to attend a funeral ceremony at Dowa Turn Off.

Sub-Inspector M’bumpha said on their return from the funeral ceremony, the deceased asked to be dropped from the motor vehicle they were travelling in, informing his brothers that he wanted to see a friend by the name of Vincent Gondwe of Nyalubwe Village.
The following day, Tuesday December 29, one of James’ brothers, Jephter Saona and other relatives were concerned when their relation did not report back home.
The police report says the relations checked with Gondwe but they were told James never met him that day and had no idea about his whereabouts.
“The relations reported the matter of a missing person at Mtengowanthenga Police Unit and on Wednesday December 30, 2020, a report was received that an unknown person had been found dead in a stream at Kanjondo Village.
“The body of the unknown person was identified by Yakonia Weston James’ brother when he and the police visited the scene.”

Sub-Inspector M’bumpha says the matter was reported to Dzaleka Police Unit and consulted a medical officer, whom they took to the scene of the incident where he confirmed that death was due to hemorrhage secondary to multiple head injuries.
He further said the police’s investigation and suspicions fell on the husband Makanjira and after his arrest he admitted to have killed James.
Sub-Inspector M’bumpha says the suspect will appear before court soon to answer the charge of murder.
Meanwhile, a suspect who was arrested on allegations of theft in Ntcheu, died while in police custody on New Year’s Eve.

Ntcheu Police PRO, Sub-Inspector Hastings Chigalu confirmed the development and has identified the deceased as Stande Nailuwa, 42 from Kaunde Village, Traditional Authority (TA) Mlumbe in Zomba.
Sub-Inspector Chigalu said the suspect was a security guard at Ntcheu Magistrates Court and around midnight of December 31, 2020, the police were tipped that someone in the cell had collapsed.
“He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival at Ntcheu District Hospital,” Chigalu said.

It is reported that Ntcheu Magistrates Court was broken into where various items such computers and other items were stolen on the night between December 21 and 22, 2020.
Police picked up Nailuwa as a suspect for questioning since he was guarding the premises on the night thieves broken into Court premises.
