Presenting the bicycles valued at K20m in Lilongwe today, World Bicycle Relief  Programs Manager, Aggie Kanthambi said her organisation was motivated to provide the bicycles “in recognition of ROSAF’s efforts to protect school children”.

“ROSAF is playing a pivotal role in championing the safety of children on Malawi roads,” Kanthambi said. “We have, therefore, been motivated to make this donation to boost its efforts.

“We have every hope that these bicycles will help its volunteers to reach out to various places to do their work,” said, which ROSAF’S Executive Director, Joel Jere acknowledged as the investment as a “huge boost and timely gesture”.

“Our volunteers have been walking long distances to reach their stations — but with these bicycles, they can travel faster and far and help reduce the number of accidents involving our children,” Jere said.

Through its 1,000 volunteers, Jere said ROSAF is making “significant strides in reducing road accidents involving school children — working along the M1 Road from Lilongwe to Karonga in sensitising road users on road safety.

Its volunteers stand at various spots to help school children safely cross this very busy road full of traffic to and from Lilongwe and Karonga town — the border with Tanzania.
