Minister of Homeland Security, Peter Mukhito has conveyed the Government’s appreciation for the “courage, leadership and commitment to protecting lives” displayed by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police responsible for Operations, Dr Noel Kayira — when he got involved in the operation that secured the rescue of kidnapped Nasrat Osman.

Kaira led Malawi Police Service operation to rescue the 47-year-old British national, Nusrat Osman, who was kidnapped by four unidentified men at Mount Pleasant in Blantyre on Friday, September 11, 2026.
In a statement, the MPS reports that Osman was rescued on Thursday at Chadzunda in Mpemba during an intelligence-led police operation.
But the operation resulted in an exchange of fire between police and the suspected kidnappers, who were armed with an AK-47 rifle and a Girsan Regard MC pistol.
The MPS reported that the officers responded to the suspects’ gun-shot resistance during the operation that left the DIG with gunshot injuries.
Along with the suspects, Kaira was rushed to the hospital for medical attention where the suspects later succumbed to their injuries.
Mukhito after checking on the DIG this morning
Minister Mukhito reported on his official Facebook account that he visited DIG Kayira at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre where remains under medical care following the injuries he sustained during the operation
“During my visit, I conveyed the Government’s appreciation for his courage, leadership and commitment to protecting lives,” said the Minister.
“I commend Dr Kayira and all the men and women of the Malawi Police Service for their courage, dedication and unwavering commitment to protecting the lives and security of our people.
Inspector General Luhanga also visited Kaira
“We continue to pray for Dr Kayira’s recovery and for the safety of all police officers who put their lives on the line in the service of our nation.
“I, therefore, kindly appeal to the public and the media to respect Dr Kayira’s privacy and allow the medical team to perform its duties without unnecessary interference, while police investigations into the kidnapping continue.”
The office of the Vice-President, Jane Ansah SC, JA, (retired), also reported that she visited DIG Kaira at Mwaiwathu to wish him a speedy and full recovery.
A flier published on social media by Nusrat Osman’s family profoundly applaud the whole MPS for their swift action, professionalism, and commitment, saying: “In them we trust.”
And for Kaira, they say: “His courage, selflessness and dedication to protecting the lives of Malawians will never be forgotten”.
Mukhito and the MPS state that investigations into the kidnapping are ongoing and urged the public to remain calm while allowing police to complete investigations.
