There is mixed reactions following the suspension of head coach Bob Mpinganjira soon after losing 1-2 to Ekhaya in Airtel Top 8 final on Sunday — with some indicating that the decision might boomerang on the Nomads’ face ahead of their CAF Champions League against Tanzanian side Simba Sports Club.
Wanderers announced the suspension of Mpinganjira just hours after the defeat to Ekhaya FC — missing out on the title they last won way back in 2022.
The club statement, signed by Board secretary, Chancy Gondwe, did not indicate the reason for the coach’s suspension but just indicated that it would later announce an interim head coach and any change of composition of technical panel.
On Tuesday evening, Gondwe then issued another statement that Bob’s assistant, McDonald Mtetemera has been appointed as interim head coach.
Renowned football analyst, Charles ‘Grandmaster’ Nyirenda expressed his concern over Bob’s suspension just days before their upcoming CAF Champions League assignment, arguing that the move may disrupt preparations.
The Lali Lubani Road club are expected to face the Tanzanian giants Simba hosting them for the first leg on Sunday, September 6 at Bingu National Stadium before travelling to Tanzania for the return leg on Friday, September 11.
In an interview today, Nyirenda described the decision as a gamble, noting that it could have a double edged impact with an impending CAF Champions League match days away.
“A completely new coach to the club may struggle to stamp their authority on the team inside five days before the weekend match against Simba,” he said.

Nyirenda suggested that a caretaker panel from the current staff could not provide immediate impact needed by introducing new tactics and alternative player combinations.
“Right now we don’t know what specifically it is that the club is not happy about with the coach,” he said, while another football analyst, Annointed Kamsampha, said the decision seemed to be fuelled by emotions.
He argued that waiting would have been a better alternative, especially with a crucial CAF Champions League match against Simba SC this weekend.
“We are not sure about the basis of their final decision, but we can reliably say that it was an emotional decision,” he said.
Bob Mpinganjira led Mighty Wanderers to the super league title last season, ending the Nomads’ eight year top flight league title drought.

Commenting on Facebook, Kanyoza Bandamatope opined that the Nomads “first must learn to accept whatever happens and must learn to be humble, no matter what resources they have, because football is unpredictable and decisions like these can either make or break a team”.
But Thocco Gerrard argued that “football demands results and sometimes clubs give their coaches targets when signing contracts — so, if this is what they had agreed there is nothing wrong” that the team management has done.
Nelson Mwambene also agreed, saying: “The decision is good, and has come at the right time. Tougher situations attract strong decision.”
He indicated that being a final, the coach should have executed some deep tactical approach after the Cowboys showed pedigree by defeating 4-time winners and defending champions Nyasa Big Bullets on post match penalty shootout after playing out to 2-2 aggregate (1-1 in each of the legs of the quarterfinals).

He also took note that Wanderers equalised in the 59th minute after they trailed from the 38th through penalty spot goal the Cowboys scored.
Mwambene thus argues that that’s when a coach should come in with deeper tactical skills by even consulting his technical staff.
A Silver Strikers fan, Steve Namondwe said: “It is quite unfortunate that many are failing to recognise the apparent elements of conflict of interest within the management.
“From a footballing perspective, the team itself appears compromised, while the coach and players may be largely innocent of the circumstances surrounding the situation.
“Finishing second is still a commendable achievement and deserves to be celebrated and appreciated, rather than overshadowed by internal management concerns.
“This is my perspective from the Silver benches — judge the football fairly, but do not ignore what is happening beyond the pitch.”

Fanuel Kachiwala observed that the decision is “just adding salt to the wound taking into account that they have a crucial game [against Simba]”.
“Bob would be so important to prepare the boys,” Kachiwala wrote, adding that football is just not all about winning all the time.
“If we rate Noma is 80% fine at the moment, koma izizi angopangitsa kuti ku team kulowe mphepo yoipa.”
Obv Rodgers was also of the view that “suspending Bob Mpinganjira at this stage is a questionable decision. Losing the Airtel Top 8 final is disappointing, but making a major coaching decision just before a crucial CAF Champions League match against Simba SC could create more instability than solutions.
“If the club genuinely believes a change is necessary, it should have been handled earlier or after giving the coach enough time to build his team.
“Right now, what the Mighty Wanderers need most is stability, proper planning and unity — not panic decisions after one defeat.
With one game left to wrap up the first round of the top flight FDH Bank Premiership, Mighty Wanderers are second on the log table with 29 points — sharing with Silver Strikers, who are at the summit on goal difference.
From 14 games played, both the Bankers and the Nomads won 8, drew 5, lost once while Silver scored 23 goals and conceded 5 — with Wanderers scoring 26 and conceding 9.
On 3rd place are Blue Eagles with 28 points, 4th is occupied by Nyasa Big Bullets (27 points); Masters FC on 5th (21pts); Chitipa United 6th (20pts); LUANAR Mitundu 7th (19pts); and Red Lions 8th (19pts) — as the cutting out point for the Airtel Top 8.
