Emmanuel M’buthuka has just graduated with Credit in Bachelors of Arts in Communication & Marketing attained at Mzuzu University (MZUNI) — an achievement that is being best described as “a journey that is nothing short of inspiring” since he funded himself first working as a security guard for Target Security Group (TSG) Ltd.

He worked his way up at TSG to being considered for a post in Finance & Administration and TSG management couldn’t help it but declare in its internal communication: “That’s what we call determination, discipline and drive! We are incredibly proud of you, Emmanuel.
“Your story reminds us that no dream is too big, and no role is too small when paired with purpose. Congratulations, our very own PR in the making!”
The 27-year-old M’buthuka says he had just attained his Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) certificate that earned him a place at MZUNI to study for the Bachelors of Arts in Communication & Marketing — but in his second semester of his first year (2019-2020 academic year), financial difficulties arose after his brother, who was responsible for Emmanuel’s education’s fees and other academic needs, lost his job.

However, he continued his studies all the while accumulating outstanding fees arrears prompting him to apply for a job as a security guard at TSG in 2021.
“I was hired to work in the Northern Region and after completing the required training, I was posted to work at the office as a night security guard in 2022,” he tells Nyasa Times. “My studies in my second year at MZUNI included some accounting courses, which gave me basic knowledge in finance and administration.
“In late 2023, there was a big change at our office — a staff member who was responsible for finance & administration resigned, and that created an open opportunity as I saw this as a chance to try something new and grow in my career.”

He narrates that he added his background in accounting in his CV to apply for an internship in the finance & administration department and he got the job, thus graduating from his role as a security guard to working in an office.
“This new position gave me the chance to show my skills, learn more about finance and administration, and gain valuable work experience,” he says. “It was a big step forward in my professional journey, and I am thankful for the opportunity to grow and contribute more to the company.”
He paid tribute to TSG management for trusting in him for the internship in finance and administration department as it gave him more room to continue pursuing his academic dreams as well sustain expenses at his brother’s home where he was operating from.
“After working for a year, the company was able to provide loan to cater for semester fees then deducting from my salary for six months before taking another loan for the next semester up to the end.”

The MZUNI graduation was presided over by Vice-Chancellor, President Lazarus Chakwera

Going forward, Emmanuel contends that Masters of Arts in Communication & Marketing being a major, his immediate ambition is to pursue further studies in financial accounting.
“My experience at Target Security has shown the practical value of marketing in business,” he says. “With technology advancing rapidly, there is need to modernise corporate marketing strategies.”
So how does it feel to reach this far: “It’s an honour; I have learnt that success comes through dedication, discipline, perseverance, commitment — and never forgetting to pray.
“Most young people fail because they try to appear decent too early. They fear what others might say when they are seen doing jobs they never thought themselves doing.
“They end up blaming their parents for their failure to fund them without appreciating the financial challenges they are facing. In truth, success requires humility and sacrifice,” said the new professional in the business communication and marketing sector.

In an interview, TSG Regional Manager-North, Angela Mselu said the company is proud to have supported Emmanuel’s determination, saying: “This accomplishment reflects not only his personal commitment but also the values we uphold at TSG — supporting the growth and development of our employees.
“Emmanuel’s journey is a true example of what can be achieved through hard work and the right support. We celebrate this milestone with him and look forward to his continued contributions to the organisation,” she said.
TSG is a leading multi-service security, fire and facilities management services provider delivering complete solutions to a wide range of private and public sector clients nationwide.
It started in 2014 as First Response Group and later in 2020 was rebranded as Target Security Group, whose head office is in Blantyre, supported by regional offices in Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu.
