As of the end of August 2026, Lot 3 of M1 Road rehabilitation between Jenda and Mzimba turnoff continues to register significant progress, with key activities now exceeding 86% completion.
On its official Facebook account, the Roads Authority reports that 43km out of 47km has been surfaced, and that construction of major and minor drainage structures, slope protection works and other critical construction activities are nearing completion.
“The project also includes climbing lanes to improve safety and traffic flow, particularly for heavy trucks on steep sections of the road,” says the report.
The M1 Road rehabilitation from Lilongwe all the way to Karonga is being carried out in Lot phases, with the Chiweta-Karonga stretch being one.
In June, civil society organisations (CSOs), led by Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC), threatened to close off this stretch to force the government to speed up its rehabilitation.
Minister of Transport & Public Works, Jappie Mhango engaged the CSOs last month where he assured that the rehabilitation will commence in November.
