The current weather now being experienced since this afternoon is Chiperoni, which the Department of Climate Change & Meteorological Services  (DCCMS) forecasted to be associated with Mwera winds blowing on Lake Malawi and other lake water bodies.

The DCCMS forecasted on Friday, May 9  that Mwera winds were expected blow on Lake Malawi and other lake water bodies from tomorrow night May 12 with a speed of more than 50km/h.

There will be high water waves of more than 2 meters in height and that the winds are expected to subside by Thursday May 15.

“Consequently, we are also likely to experience Chiperoni weather, which is associated with rainy, windy, cloudy, and chilly conditions, including fog patches over many areas beginning from the southern Malawi progressing northwards.

The DCCMS thus advises the general public, especially lake users to exercise safety precautionary measures that include avoiding fishing, swimming or using small boats and canoes during this period.

And to wear warm clothing, particularly the elderly and children and for heating households, to avoid using charcoal burners with closed windows and doors.

Those with asthmatic conditions (mphumu) are advised to be extra cautious while motorists should exercise caution due to reduced visibility during foggy conditions.
