In a statement signed by Rev M. Mulagha of Synod of Livingstonia, Rev Master Jumbe of Blantyre Synod and Rev E.Y.M. Mwanza of Nkhoma Synod, the CCAP describes the election as an important duty, saying: “As Christians, we are called to be salt and light in the world (Matthew 5:13–16), and one way we live this calling is by participating responsibly in the affairs of our nation.

“The prophet Jeremiah urged God’s people in exile to ‘seek the peace and prosperity of the city… pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper’ (Jeremiah 29:7).

“By voting, we are seeking the good of our communities and our country. At the same time, let us remain prayerful — before, during, and after the election. Let us pray for peace, for wisdom for those who lead and for unity among all Malawians.

“We also call on every Christian to refrain from practices that undermine the electoral process. Do not be swayed by rumour or falsehoods, but trust only in reliable information.”

The Church also implores on the electorate to “avoid spreading misinformation, bribery, intimidation, or violence” while bearing witness to the truth and act with integrity.

“As followers of Christ, we know that ‘God is not a God of disorder but of peace’ (1 Corinthians 14:33). Therefore, let us conduct ourselves in a way that honours Him, builds our communities and strengthens our nation.

“May the Lord bless Malawi, guide this election and establish justice and peace in our land,” says the statement by the Church and Society.
