An angry mob Monday set ablaze a vehicle registration number KA 1612 at Luzi in Mzimba after it had killed two pedestrians and injured two along the M1 Road between Bwengu and Phwezi.
The two injured persons have since been admitted to Rumphi District Hospital.
Though in Mzimba District, Luzi is closer to Rumphi District and relies on the latter district for most of its social services.
According to Rumphi Police Station Public Relations Officer, Tupeliwe Kabwilo the motor vehicle registration number KA 1612 was heading towards Phwezi from Bwengu.
“Upon arrival at Luzi Trading Centre, the driver, Lucky Nyasulu, failed to negotiate a left bend and lost control of the vehicle due to over speeding.
“As a result, the motor vehicle missed the road and diverted to the extreme road side where it ended up hitting four pedestrians who were walking towards the opposite direction,” Kabwilo explained.
She said the driver of the vehicle escaped unhurt while the motor vehicle got extensively damaged before it was set ablaze by angry mob who rushed to the scene of the accident.
The deceased have been identified as Alice Chaponga, 14, of Navuka Village and Chimango Munthali, 6, of Kamkwamba Village both from in the area of Traditional Authority Jalavikuba in Mzimba District.
“We have since arrested the driver and is awaiting court trial to answer charges of causing death by reckless driving,” said Kabwilo.
Nyasulu hails from Chikayamba Village in Traditional Authority Mwankhunikira in Rumphi District.
