Malawi Police Service has arrested a 55-year-old woman in Kasungu on Wednesday for killing her daughter’s 38- week-old baby.

Public Relations Officer for Kasungu, Harry Namwaza, said the suspect identified as Eunice Chisi, committed the offence with an intention that her daughter’s boyfriend who was about to marry her should not know about the baby as she was impregnated by a different boy.

Namwaza said the suspect made several attempts to have her daughter abort the pregnancy until she delivered on February 14, 2019 inside her house.

“The suspect killed the baby by wrapping it in a mosquito net and burying it alive in the bush, 200 metres from her house.  She did all this without the knowledge and consent of her daughter, the mother of the child,” he said.

He further said the community members suspected that the mother of the child had killed it and reported the matter to Chulu Police Unit.

“Police arrested the suspect who accepted to have killed the child after interrogation. The body of the 38-week-old baby girl was exhumed and medical personnel established that it died due to suffocation,” he said.

Chisi has been charged with an offence of concealing birth of a child, according to Namwaza. She hails from Robert Village in Sub Traditional Authority Mphomwa in Kasungu District.
