Man Jailed for Injuring Step Son

Kasungu First Grade Magistrate Court has sentenced a 40 year old Madalitso Phiri of Sabwera Village, Traditional Authority Kawamba in the district to five years in jail for assaulting and injuring his 11 year old step son.

According to Kasungu Police Public Relations Officer, Edna Mzingwitsa, the man who married the victim’s mother identified as Joshua Chisale Phiri has been torturing his three step children by overloading them with heavy work and is said he was not enjoying their presence.

“According to eye witnesses, Phiri has been torturing his three step children by overloading them with work of not their age until one of them (the victim) failed to accomplish one of the given works.

“This made Phiri to tie his step son’s both legs and arms and started beating him with a burning wood,” said Mzingwitsa.

She said when the community saw this, they reported to authorities.

“Soon after Phiri had tortured his son, some people from the community rushed to police and reported the incident and he was arrested,” she said.

In mitigation, Phiri pleaded with the court for leniency, saying he was responsible for caring for six children.

But in his ruling, Kasungu First Grade Magistrate Damiano Banda told Phiri that being a step-father of

the children; he could have played the role of protecting his step children rather than hurting them.

Banda then sentenced Phiri to five years imprisonment with hard labour to deter other step-fathers from committing a similar crime.
