Speaking after receiving the motorcycles from Chinese government on behalf of the Malawi government at Area 30 Police ground in Lilongwe, Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Grace Chiumia commended the Chinese government for the donation, saying it would enhance security in the country.
“The Chinese government has shown that it has a giving heart hence the donation to Malawi Police Service, we appreciate the good relationship the two governments have. This is a good gesture as the motorcycles will enhance police patrols in our cities,” said Chiumia.
Inspector General of Police Lexter Kachama said the motorcycles will be used to reach to areas which are unreachable by Police vehicles.
“The battle against crime cannot be won by police alone; it requires support from stakeholders just as you have done. We are promising to be good stewards of these motorbikes which will help us conduct patrols in areas which motor vehicles cannot reach as crime prevention strategy,” he said.
Speaking in an interview after the handover ceremony Chinese Ambassador to Malawi Shi Ting Wang said the donation of motorbikes has been made to compliment the various campaigns that Malawi Police Service is undertaking to crack down on crime in the country.
He also added that his government is also committed to fulfill its promise of delivering 100 vehicles that will greatly improve the mobility and efficiency of Malawi Police Service by the end of 2017 or early next year.
“This is part of the bigger donation of 100 state of the art vehicles which the Chinese government will make to Malawi. We are speeding up the process of this donation and as I am talking the vehicles are being manufactured according to the specifications provided by Malawi Police Service and in October they will be ready for shipment to Malawi,” he said.
Apart from the donation of these motorbikes the Chinese government has also been helping the Malawi Police Service in capacity building through providing scholarships and short term training programs which are offered to Malawi police officers in China.mbc
