Police in Lilongwe are keeping in custody a 37-year-old man for impersonating a police officer.
Lilongwe Police Station Spokesperson Inspector Kingsley Dandaula identified the suspect as George Doviko from Kasambwe village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Mwambo in Zomba but is a resident of area 24 in Lilongwe.
Dandaula told the Malawi News Agency on Tuesday that in July 2016, the suspect handcuffed Musa Issa (20) accusing him of breaking into a shop at Chinsapo location in Lilongwe.
“He later released Issa who is a mobile phone vendor and ripped him off nine phones valued at K330, 000.
“Yesterday, October 3, 2016, the suspect was apprehended and brought to Lilongwe Police by members of the general public as he was trying to con some people in town.
“He was wearing a pair of khakhi trousers and military boots and upon searching him, he was found with handcuffs and a Kenwood two-way radio receiver,” Dandaula said.
Meanwhile investigations are still in progress and Police are warning the general public to report suspicious people claiming to be cops.
