Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Dr George Chaponda made the remarks during a tour to Karonga and Kalenge Water Treatment Plants under Chitipa Water Supply Project.
“I am impressed with the progress being made in the implementation of the projects,” said Dr Chaponda adding that government is making sure that everyone has access to portable water.
Government through the Northern Region Water Board is currently implementing the Project to the tune of 13-million dollars co-funded by Malawi government and BADEA.
The Minister during the tour appreciated the Garnet Halliday Water Project in Karonga that was constructed by Paladin Africa, the multi-national company that was licensed to mine uranium in the district.
The multi-million Dollar project collapsed soon after it was commissioned and it is said to be complicated and expensive to maintain.
This prompted the Northern Region Water Board to come up with an alternative water treatment plant to continue to provide safe and portable water to its customers in the district.
Currently, the Northern Region Water Board is engaging the communities around Kalenge River catchment area to prevent siltation.
The project which is expected to be completed by December this year will benefit people from both urban and rural areas in the district mbc.
