Malawian Leaders Mourn Rose Chibambo

Dr ChakweraBoth government and opposition leaders have described the sudden death of Rose Chibambo who was the first woman in the cabinet of Malawi which was led by the late Ngwazi Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda under the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) rule in 1964.
The late Chibambo breathed her last lately at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in the Commercial City of Blantyre after a battle with heart problems according to one of the family members Kamuzu Chibambo who is President of the People’s Transformation Party (PETRA).
Chibambo said that the family members were yet to come up with the funeral programme but the vigil was taking place at his home situated in Nyambadwe.
Meanwhile, many people and politicians in have described her death as a shock to the nation.
Leader of the Malawi National Assembly who is also President of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Dr Lazarus Chakwera had this to say, “As I am talking to you, before me is a picture of the first cabinet with Chibambo as the only woman.
“That speaks volumes about the caliber of a person we have lost. It is not only a loss to the Malawi Congress Party but to the entire nation.”
Malawi’s Information and Tourism Minister Jappie Mhango said Malawi has lost a woman who dedicated her life in serving the country with diligence.
On his part, former State President of the Republic of Malawi Dr. Bakili Muluzi explained that the late Chibambo will be remembered as a political icon whose contribution will never be forgotten for the future.
“She first joined the fight for Malawi’s Independence then became a first female cabinet minister. That is no mean achievement,” said Muluzi.
The late Rose Chibambo was born on September 8 in 1928 at Kafukule in the northern District of Mzimba.
