Parents of an albino child go hiding with their daughter in Zomba

Parents of a two year old girl in Zomba are living in fear following reports that they are receiving threats from anonymous people. The threats being issued are directed towards their daughter, an albino, pertaining to the infamous albino abductions that have rocked the country’s eastern region. Speaking to the media earlier on Friday, mother to the girl, Mrs Doreen Kamwendo from Chidothe Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwambo in Zomba told ZBS they were planning of leaving the area for safety reasons.

Mrs Kamwendo claimed having reported the matter to Kachulu Police Station some three days back but there has not been in signs of commitment from the police that they will pursue the matter and see to it that the girl is protected. Zomba Police Spokesperson sergeant Patricia Supriano said her office had not received any report concerning the matter. She was however quick to say that they will investigate the matter.

Mrs Kamwendo says the unknown people are allegedly threatening that they will take the girl away and offer her to people that are buying albino body parts for ritualistic purposes. Mrs Kamwendo, a resident of Chidothe Flood Victims Camp following her home’s destruction in the early January floods, said some men in the area had been frequenting the camp to warn her about their prospective plan of kidnapping the girl. The woman said the men told her that her daughter’s body parts would go at a prize of k1million.

The country’s eastern region has seen a rise in albino abductions ever since news went viral of similar acts in neighbouring Tanzania, with perpetrators of the act believing that albino body parts are good for charms that make one prosperous.
