The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has appointed Finance Minister Dr Goodall Gondwe and Jappie Mhango as the new vice president for the party in the north and Campaign Director respectively.
Confirming the development on Monday, DPP spokesperson Francis Katsaira told Malawi News Agency (Mana) that the appointments were with immediate effect.
“It is true that DPP has appointed Dr Goodall Gondwe as the new party’s vice president in the North replacing Nick Masebo who is now the presidential adviser on Youth and Jappie Mhango as the new Campaign Director for the party in the North replacing Vuwa Kaunda who is now the presidential adviser on National Unity and Parliamentary Affairs,” Katsaira said.
“Before coming up with this decision the party had to consult the former holders of the posts if they would prefer to maintain their new role as advisers or go back to their previous posts, the two chose to remain presidential advisers thus the party deciding on Gondwe and Mhango,” he added.
With Kaunda and Masebo serving as presidential advisers, meaning they are more like civil servants, Katsaira said the two could thus not hold positions within the party’s ranks.
On why the party settled for Gondwe and Mhango, Katsaira said the party looked at their capabilities in terms of political affiliation and other angles.
“Gondwe in particular has the respect for the people in the region and is treated with high esteem among others hence entrusted him with the position as the new vice president of the party in the region.
“On the other hand, Mhango is energetic and very willing to run-out for the benefit of the party as the campaign director,” he highlighted.
However, the spokesperson refuted rumors that Kaunda and Masebo have been fired.
Gondwe serves as Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development while Jappie Mhango is the Deputy Minister of Defence.
